Veronica Dennis, a freshman here at Queensbury High School, recently put out an album called “Blue Haired Girl'' under the name Rosegold. Veronica moved here two years and immediately showed the Queensbury Music Department that she was passionate about music. Rosegold joined chorus, auditioned for solos and the middle school’s select show choir; anyone could recognize that she loved music. She is now in Madri-Gals, the high school’s new all female choir. Over quarantine collaborating with her producer, OGKush The Alien, and Josh Needleman, a musician who resides in LA, she released her first album. According to Veronica, the album is dedicated to her friends who are going through things, each song has its own story, and so does she.
Rosegold As you probably noticed, the album was published under the name “Rosegold”, the name Rose is Veronica’s middle name, which she shares with her grandma. She chose this name because she wanted her music to be tied to her family in some way, but represent a new generation. Her instagram handle is @Rosegoldvee, the “Vee” in the name was added because Rose gold was already taken so she chose it to represent her real name.
Songwriting Even though this is her first album, these are not her first songs. She has been songwriting for years; exactly when she started is debatable. Her advice for those first starting out in the songwriting world is that, “it's ok if it's not perfect at first.” She has been writing for a long time and she still struggles with writer’s block, she says it happens all the time. She handles her writer’s block by going out and exercising.
Music Industry All music artists have others that they admire or idolize. I asked Veronica if she could name a few artists that she looks up to, her top four were Billie Eilish, Girl in Red, The Weekend, and Harry Styles. She said that they influenced her as a person and her style, but not her album. Her voice is often compared to Billie Eilish and is hoping to move away from that and become better known for her voice, rather than her closeness to others. When asked what song she wished she wrote she said, “Somebody That I Used To Know” by Gotye.
Background Album Info Veronica said that many of her songs are specifically about her friends. Friends helped her with the construction of the album; Emma Guyette, for example, designed the album’s cover art. The most popular songs are “Poison Head” and “I Will Fight”, but Veronica’s favorite song in the album is “I Will Fight Again.” Throughout the album the instrumentals seem to be electronic, but in her song “Love Letter”, you can hear Veronica playing the ukulele, she said this is because she wanted to keep it simple, like a real love letter. Veronica’s song “Please Stay” is very obviously an emotional song, when asked what it was about or who it was for she said it was written for someone else to hear, that it wasn’t specific to one person, but for someone who needed it. The writing of the song “Please Stay” has quite the story behind it; Veronica wrote it while she was locked out of the house. “Finding Future” is about quarantine and the want to get out and leave.
Collaborations Veronica’s producer OG Kush The Alien was very helpful to her during the album’s creation, Veronica stating that he was nocturnal, staying up at all hours to work on it. The first song in the album “The Show Is About To Begin”, is something not typically seen in albums. It is entirely instrumental with no vocals, this was OG’s idea. Veronica and OG plan to make it a song later on. Veronica also worked with Josh Needleman on the song “I Will Fight Again,” he played the stand up bass. Veronica has plans to collaborate with Josh again on her new single “Love is War.” Brian Mull will be playing the guitar.
More About Veronica Veronica says her spirit animal is a Cat because her mood tends to change randomly. She has a fear of deep water, so when choosing between a pool or a beach she chose a pool. She prefers movies over books and is a fan of Animes. Veronica is a part of the LGBTQ+ community and has written some about people she is attracted to. She has performed once before at The Tavern in Queensbury and has another gig on March 9th at 7pm for anyone interested. Veronica is always up for song suggestions, if you have a song you want her to cover let her know! Make sure to follow Veronica on instagram @Rosegoldvee.
Future Plans Veronica does not plan on ending her music career any time soon. She told me that she will only be releasing singles for now, her current favorite that is in the development stages is “Love is War.” Veronica’s hair was a big part of the album, she plans on dying it some time in the future, currently she plans on it being a rose shade to match her name. She said the next album probably wouldn’t be named after her hair color, but thought it would be funny if it was. I asked if she would leave Queensbury in the future to pursue music, she said yes.
From Veronica Veronica wants to thank her middle school bully. Without her, Veronica doesn’t think she would be as passionate about music as she currently is. If you want to be as passionate about music as she is, her advice is to, “try a little bit of everything.” Veronica wants her listeners to know to not judge her by her first album, because there is much more to come. When asked if she could describe her album in five words or less she said “A first step.” She also wants Mrs. Verheyn to know that she is sorry for leaving her violin in the orchestra room in eighth grade, she was too scared to go get it back.
